The Department of 数学 offers B.S. 和B.A. degrees in mathematics as well as a minor in mathematics. 所有 mathematics majors, either B.S. 或B.A., and minors must earn grades of at least C- in all courses taken in fulfillment of the requirements for the mathematics major or minor. MATH 6000-level courses may be taken for either B.S. 或B.A. major by students who have fulfilled the prerequisites and have departmental permission.
Double Major Options within B.A. 学位
Modern applied and computational mathematics is highly interdisciplinary, with applications spanning engineering, 物理科学, 社会科学, 数据科学, 和教育. Therefore, a second major in mathematics is an ideal complement to many other majors at SMU. 因此，B.A. degree in mathematics is focused on breadth, and allows considerable flexibility in the courses used to satisfy its requirements. Mathematically-inclined students from other majors are strongly encouraged to read about the various options described in the B.A. 目录项 and contact the departmental adviser with any questions.
Departmental Distinction within B.S. 学位
Reflecting a focus on depth of mathematical training and a preparation for future research in the mathematical sciences, B.S. degree in mathematics provides a means for students to graduate with departmental distinction if they meet each of the following requirements:
- 绩点保持在3分.6 or above in all mathematics courses
- complete 3 credit hours of MATH 4X99: Undergraduate 研究
- complete an honors thesis/project/presentation
Interested students should submit to the undergraduate adviser an initial proposal for a plan of research. The student’s final thesis/project/presentation will be submitted to a three-person faculty committee for approval.
