Dr. Carrie La Ferle is a professor of ethics 和 culture at the Temerlin 广告 Institute at SMU. La Ferle holds a Ph.D. in advertising from The University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. in advertising from Michigan State University 和 a B.A. in sociology from the University of Western Ontario. 在多伦多长大, Carrie worked for Chiat/Day on the Nissan account before working in Tokyo for four years. Formally trained as a sociologist, she brings a broad underst和ing of culture 和 interpersonal communication to effective messaging. She is further certified as a Cultural Intelligence & Unconscious Bias Trainer 和 Educator.

With over 60 publications, La Ferle’s research examines how culture (national, 种族/民族, 宗教, 等.) impacts effective communication 和 the importance of ethics 和 social responsibility in advertising. Her work is widely published in prestigious journals such as the Journal of 广告Journal of 广告 ResearchInternational Journal of 广告 和 Journal of Business Research. She has been a Visiting Fellow at Nanyang Technological Institute in Singapore, on industry research leave in Costa Rica, 和 has enjoyed several summers teaching graduate-level international advertising in Hong Kong.

Beyond teaching cultural intelligence 和 social responsibility in advertising, La Ferle’s recent publications include an examination of how guilt 和 shame messaging in an Eastern context impacts byst和er intervention. She has also been examining the impact of culture on sustainability, generational issues, 和 how 宗教 symbols in the US, 印度, 和 Israel can enhance message effectiveness. Her latest research is exploring CQ in 广告 to enhance an organization’s DEI&B计划. 

La Ferle works to positively influence society by sharing the importance of building trust 和 authentic long-term relationships between br和s, their consumers 和 society through cultural underst和ing 和 ethical behavior. She further thrives on developing cultural intelligence within education, faith-based organizations 和 any agency looking to underst和 how cultural knowledge can positively impact effective communication 和 interpersonal relationships.

La Ferle has received multiple awards for her teaching, research, 和 service to the field. At SMU she is the recipient of the President’s Associates Outst和ing 教师 Award (2009), the Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor Award (2012), the Golden Apple (2018) from Meadows School of the 艺术s 和 TAI’s Research Scholar of the Year award (2019)In 2018La Ferle was chosen as an AAF Shining Star in recognition of women who have positively impacted the Dallas advertising industry. In 2021, she co-authored Preaching 和 the Thirty-Second Commercial: Lessons from 广告 for the Pulpit 和 was honored with the AAA’s prestigious Rotzoll Career Award for 广告 道德 & Social Responsibility.

As an active member of the American Academy of 广告 for 25 years, La Ferle has held numerous positions from newsletter editor 和 secretary to vice president. She currently serves on the editorial review board of the Journal of 广告. She is also a member of the Maguire Center for 道德 和 Public Responsibility, 和 a voice on the ANA’s Global CMO Growth Council supporting the need for cultural intelligence 和 ethical representation in marketing for industry growth. La Ferle lives in Dallas, TX with her husb和 of 25 years 和 they have two teenage children.
